In 2001, a woman named Rhonda wrote in her blog about a mystery in her family. One morning, Rhonda’s sister fell very ill. She had terrible stomach cramps and couldn’t walk. The pain never ended. She went through numerous tissue and muscle biopsies and no doctor could figure out what was wrong.

Eventually they chose a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, but this didn’t seem right to Rhonda. The symptoms weren’t consistent with MS. She recalled a study that she read about aspartame, a common sweetener in diet sodas and other sweets.

She went out on a limb and asked her sister if she drank diet soda. She said yes, in fact, a lot of it. So Rhonda got her to stop drinking diet soda. What happened next was crazy.

“My sister called me within 32 hours after our phone conversation and told me she had stopped drinking the diet soda AND she could walk! The muscle spasms went away,” Rhonda says.

Aspartame poisoning has numerous symptoms. Decreased vision, high blood pressure, headaches, and dizziness among them. Rhonda strongly believes that her sister was poisoned by the aspartame found in diet soda.

Pepsi Co recently replaced its aspartame with sucralose, which is passed safely through the body. With any luck, others will take the initiative to phase out aspartame as well.
